Services Oriented Architectures are the basis upon which Business Process Management solutions are built. Services enable external systems to have access to data and processes without the need to know the the technology implementation or the platform. There is no need to know whether the system is based on .NET, Java, Unidata, SQL, Oracle or any other development technology - the consumer of the Service does not need to know or learn any proprietary technology.

With Services it is no longer necessary to create customized feeds between systems to transport data, which becomes stale and old as soon as it is transfered anyways. 

There is no need to learn languages and understand internal implementations to retrieve information. Services present data in a standard XML like format that can be understood by any system.
